The Complete Guide to Lamello P-System Joinery

Zeta P2, Clamex, Tenso, Divario, and Bisco Connectors

Modern architectural millwork, bespoke commercial casework, and precision cabinetry have to satisfy two competing demands: flawless, invisible aesthetics and efficient, repeatable production.

Traditional joinery methods—including wooden dowels, confirmat screws, pocket holes, and cam-and-dowel fittings—can create avoidable bottlenecks. They often require extensive clamping, leave visible hardware or edge caps, increase shipping volume because assemblies must be transported fully built, and add labor during installation.

The Lamello P-System is designed to remove those constraints. Engineered in Switzerland, it is a form-locking joinery system that anchors specialized connectors in an undercut profile groove. The connectors provide alignment, clamping, or detachable assembly without relying on screws for positioning. Depending on the fitting, glue may be added for a permanent joint, but the connector establishes the joint location and holds the parts together during assembly.

The same connector ecosystem can be machined manually with the Lamello Zeta P2 or produced on 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machining centers. That makes the P-System practical for custom shops, architectural millwork manufacturers, and higher-volume production facilities.

This guide explains the mechanical principles behind the system, outlines the role of each connector, compares hand-tool and CNC production, and shows how detachable joinery can reduce shipping and installation labor.

How the P-System works

Every P-System fitting uses a standardized profile geometry. Clamex P, Tenso P, Divario P, and Bisco P connectors share a matching anchoring profile that engages an undercut groove.

The groove begins as a standard slot. At the programmed depth, the cutter creates the lateral undercut that forms the locking shoulder. The connector is then pressed or slid into the slot, where its ribs, clips, or locking mechanism engage the profile.

Standardizing the groove across panel thicknesses from approximately 12 mm to 30 mm and beyond allows a shop to use one joinery platform for several applications:

  • Ready-to-assemble (RTA) shipping: Complex assemblies can travel flat-packed and be assembled on site with minimal tools.

  • Clamp-free glue-ups: Tenso connectors hold miters, curved components, and other difficult shapes closed while adhesive cures.

  • Concealed partitions and shelves: Dividers and fixed shelves can be installed after the primary carcass has been assembled.

  • Repeatable alignment: The connector registers parts accurately and helps operators bring finished surfaces flush.

Mechanical principles: form-locking without screws

Traditional knock-down fittings often depend on threaded steel studs biting into particleboard or MDF. Under repeated assembly, vibration, or high loads, those threads can loosen or tear out. The P-System takes a different approach: the connector is captured by the shape of the machined groove.

The undercut profiling motion

The specialized cutter plunges into the substrate to a defined depth—commonly 10 mm, 14 mm, or 18 mm, depending on the connector. At full depth, the Zeta P2 activates its vertical oscillating system (VOS). On a CNC, the same geometry is produced with a programmed interpolation path or a dedicated profile tool.

The result is a precise undercut shoulder on both sides of the pocket. The connector's flexible ribs or locking elements engage that shoulder rather than relying on a screw thread in the panel core.

Tool-free connector insertion

Connector halves are inserted by hand. Depending on the fitting, the parts either snap into the profile, slide together, or lock with a small access tool. This gives the operator a fast, clean assembly process without visible fastener heads on the finished exterior.

Key structural and production advantages include:

  1. High tensile and shear resistance: Load is distributed across the undercut profile instead of concentrated in a small screw thread.

  2. No fastener migration: Because screws are not driven into the panel edge, there is less risk of splitting, veneer bulging, or a misaligned screw trajectory.

  3. Lateral tolerance: The connectors provide intentional installation tolerance—typically about ±1.0 mm to ±1.5 mm—so the operator can bring the joint perfectly flush before final lockup.

Connector guide: choose the fitting for the job

The best connector depends on the load, panel thickness, assembly environment, and whether the joint must be detachable.

Clamex P-14 and P-10: detachable RTA connectors

Clamex P is the detachable fitting in the Lamello family. It uses two reinforced connector halves: one contains a rotating zinc die-cast locking lever, and the other provides the mating anchor.

  • Operation: A discreet 6 mm access hole accepts a 4 mm hex key. Rotating the lever draws the two parts together with up to 100 kg (220 lb) of clamping pressure.

  • Versatility: Clamex P-14 works across miter angles from 30° to 180°, making it useful for faceted reception desks, geometric columns, display fixtures, and architectural wall systems.

  • Thin-material option: Clamex P-10 is designed for 12–13 mm solid surface, compact laminate, and thin plywood. Its 10 mm pocket depth preserves material in thinner panels while retaining form-locking performance.

Because the fitting is detachable, a shop can ship a large assembly flat-packed, reduce crate volume, and complete final assembly in a room that would be difficult to access with a fully assembled cabinet.

Tenso P-14: invisible self-clamping for glue-ups

Large casework runs, finished-edge miters, and curved components can consume valuable floor space when every joint requires bar clamps, strap clamps, or custom fixtures. They also create a queue while adhesive cures.

Tenso P-14 acts as an internal, invisible clamping system:

  • Snap-in tension: Integrated high-tensile spring clips pull the joint closed as the fitting engages.

  • Pre-load option: A preload clip reduces the insertion force and helps the joint close cleanly along its full length.

  • Immediate handling: The connector maintains pressure while the glue sets, allowing parts to be handled, edge-banded, or moved to packaging without waiting for a separate clamp setup to become available.

Tenso is not a replacement for adhesive where a permanent joint is required. Its value is that it positions and clamps the joint from inside the assembly, leaving the exterior clean.

Divario P-18: slide-in hardware for shelves and partitions

Installing an intermediate shelf or partition into an already assembled cabinet traditionally requires pocket screws, shelf pins, or awkward through-bolting. Divario P-18 is designed for a clean slide-in sequence:

  1. Cut P-System grooves in the cabinet sidewalls and the mating ends of the shelf.

  2. Assemble and clamp the carcass.

  3. Slide the shelf into position from the front.

  4. Allow the spring-loaded pins to engage, pulling the shelf firmly against the back and side walls.

The result is a flush, concealed connection with no visible hardware on the finished cabinet.

Bisco P-14: alignment biscuits for dry fitting

The Bisco P-14 uses the same general slot format as the Clamex P-14 and Tenso P-14, but it is a low-cost, non-locking alignment element.

  • Cost control: On long joints, shops can alternate active connectors with Bisco biscuits—for example, Clamex / Bisco / Clamex / Bisco—when the joint needs alignment and shear registration more than continuous clamping.

  • Dry-fit checking: Bisco allows a complex assembly to be checked in the shop before final glue-up without consuming locking cams or engaging spring clips.

Production methods: Zeta P2 or CNC

One of the P-System's strongest advantages is scalability. The same connector hardware can support a one-off custom project, a dedicated assembly bench, or a production line with CNC machining.

Zeta P2 hand tool: corded and cordless options

The Lamello Zeta P2 is a dedicated profile biscuit joiner with an integrated mechanical vertical oscillating mechanism. When the plunge reaches full depth, the mechanism triggers the oscillation that creates the undercut profile in under a second.

  • Corded Zeta P2: A strong choice for fixed assembly benches and production workshops where continuous duty matters more than portability.

  • Cordless Zeta P2 on the 18V CAS platform: Useful for field installation teams assembling knock-down millwork, fitting wall cladding, or making on-site modifications without extension cords across a commercial job site.

  • Standard biscuit flexibility: With VOS switched off, the tool operates as a conventional biscuit joiner for No. 20 wooden biscuits.

CNC integration with Cabinet Vision, Mozaik, and WoodWOP

For medium- and high-production facilities, CNC machining eliminates secondary handling and makes P-System placement part of the normal cabinet program.

1. Software macro integration

Many CAD/CAM platforms provide P-System macros or fastener-library entries:

  • Cabinet Vision and Mozaik: Apply P-System joinery parametrically to carcass sides, tops, bottoms, and dividers. The software can place the pocket paths, drill Clamex access holes, and output optimized G-code.

  • WoodWOP and Campus: Use configured machining blocks for 3-axis aggregate heads or 5-axis spindles with the appropriate interpolation routines.

2. CNC tooling profiles

CNC machines typically use diamond or PCD-tipped profile cutters mounted on HSK-63F or ISO 30 holders, or on dedicated aggregate units.

  • Nested-base routers: A 90° aggregate can machine P-System pockets on the edges and faces of nested sheets without secondary handling.

  • 5-axis machining centers: The spindle can orient the profile tool for compound miters and programmed three-dimensional joinery.

Logistics ROI: reduce shipping volume and installation labor

The P-System is more than a joinery upgrade. For many projects, it changes how the work is packaged, transported, and installed.

Traditional glued casework Lamello P-System
Ships fully assembled, including unused air space Ships flat-packed at higher cargo density
Greater freight-damage and edge-crush exposure Smaller, more manageable packages
Multiple installers maneuver large cabinets One installer can assemble many units with a hex key
Clamps occupy floor space during glue cure Internal connectors reduce clamp queues
Difficult to move through stairs and elevators Flat cartons fit standard access routes more easily

Freight and crating optimization

Transporting assembled millwork means paying to ship air. With Clamex P-14 knock-down connectors, an entire suite can be palletized flat:

  • Cargo density can increase by up to 70%, depending on the project and packaging plan.

  • Crate construction and specialized lumber requirements can be reduced.

  • Smaller packages help minimize scuffs, edge damage, and joint separation caused by long-haul vibration.

Job-site labor reductions

Commercial job sites are expensive and congested. Large reception desks, banquettes, and wall panels are difficult to maneuver through corridors, stairwells, and service elevators when they arrive fully assembled.

With the P-System:

  • Components arrive in manageable flat-packed bundles.

  • A single installer can align the self-registering joints and lock the carcass with a 4 mm hex key.

  • Architectural wall panels can be assembled with concealed Clamex hardware rather than visible brackets or fasteners.

Actual savings depend on the project design, packaging method, labor rates, and site conditions. The strongest results come when the joinery strategy is planned together with manufacturing and installation logistics.
