According to AWI Industry Solutions, 75% of woodworking companies face a critical skills shortage that directly impacts productivity and growth. That number isn't surprising when you look at the broader manufacturing landscape: roughly 462,000 manufacturing jobs remained unfilled in January 2025, and a Deloitte and Manufacturing Institute study projects that 2.1 million U.S. manufacturing positions could go unfilled by 2030.

The Architectural Woodwork Institute, an ANSI-accredited Standards Developer Organization founded in 1954, launched AWI Industry Solutions (AWI iS) in 2023 as a credentialed online learning platform built specifically for architectural woodworking. It's the most significant industry-specific training initiative to emerge in years.
The foundational "Principles of Woodworking" course includes 17 units, 61 professionally produced videos, interactive quizzes, and a final exam. Successful completion awards an industry credential. To date, AWI iS has enrolled 2,023 users and awarded 437 credentials. The course is delivered in both English and Spanish, a workforce inclusion strategy that reflects the demographic reality of the shop floor and opens training access to a broader talent pool.
AWI iS continues to expand. In July 2026, AWI launched "Wood Veneer 101" as a members-only course. A separate "Drafting Concepts to Production" course is available free to all AWI iS users, directly targeting the CAD-to-production skills gap discussed earlier.
Beyond AWI, the National Woods Board piloted The MiLL Method in 2025 and is scaling it nationally in 2026. This four-level, project-based curriculum covers machine safety, core woodworking skills, joinery, materials, and lean manufacturing practices. It's being adopted by high schools, CTE centers, and adult training programs in states with strong concentrations of woodworking, cabinet, and millwork employers.
On the formal credentialing side, the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute operates a registered apprenticeship program approved by the U.S. Department of Labor and overseen by state workforce agencies. This kind of federal recognition gives the woodworking trades a credentialing pathway that parallels what other skilled trades have had for decades.
AWI also offers a free three-year high school curriculum covering woodworking principles, furniture and cabinetry fabrication, and advanced materials technology. For shops engaged in workforce development partnerships with local schools, this is a pipeline-building resource worth knowing about.
How to Build a Lasting Internal Training Program
External frameworks are valuable, but every shop also needs its own internal training structure. A practical approach breaks down into four stages: structured onboarding, equipment-specific operator certification, safety compliance documentation, and ongoing upskilling.
Equipment-specific training is non-negotiable. Operators running industrial chop saws, edgebanders, wide belt sanders, CNC routers, and panel saws need documented, machine-level instruction. Machinery dealers and OEM resources should be integrated into your formal program rather than treated as one-time onboarding events.
