3-Axis CNC

A CNC router configuration that moves along three axes: X (left-right), Y (front-back), and Z (up-down). Most cabinet and casework shops rely on 3-axis machines for everyday nested-based production.

5-Axis CNC

An advanced CNC router configuration that adds two rotational axes to the standard three linear axes, allowing the cutting tool to approach a workpiece from virtually any angle. This capability is essential for complex three-dimensional shapes found in architectural millwork, sculptural furniture components, and mold making. Five-axis machines reduce the need for multiple setups and manual repositioning.

Abrasive Belt

The consumable sanding medium mounted on a wide belt sander. Abrasive belts are available in various widths, lengths, and grit ratings to match specific sanding operations, from heavy stock removal to fine finishing. Anderson America CNC Routers

Biscuit Joiner

Boring Head

CAD/CAM Software

Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing software used to create part drawings and generate the toolpaths a CNC router follows. CNC Machining Center

CNC Router

A computer-controlled cutting machine that uses a rotating spindle and router bit to cut, shape, drill, and engrave wood, composites, and plastics. CNC routers are central to modern cabinet, furniture, and millwork production, handling everything from nesting sheet goods to profiling solid wood components. Collet

A precision clamping sleeve inside a CNC router spindle that grips and holds the router bit shank. Collets must match the bit shank diameter exactly to ensure concentricity and prevent runout, which can cause poor cut quality and premature tool wear. Cutterhead

The rotating assembly on a moulder or planer that holds cutting knives and shapes the wood as it passes through the machine. Industrial moulders typically have four or more cutterheads, each addressing a different face of the workpiece. Cutterhead maintenance, including knife changes and bearing inspection, directly affects profile accuracy and surface finish.

Dovetailer

A dedicated machine that cuts dovetail joints for drawer boxes and casework assembly. Industrial dovetailers process multiple boards simultaneously, producing tight-fitting joints at production speeds. These machines are a staple in cabinet shops that build solid wood or plywood drawer boxes in volume.

Dust Collection

A system of ductwork, fans, and filtration units that captures wood dust and chips generated by CNC routers, sanders, moulders, saws, and other machinery. Edgebander

A machine that applies edgebanding material to the exposed edges of panels, creating a finished, durable edge on cabinet parts and furniture components. Edgebanding

The material applied to panel edges by an edgebander. Selecting the right edgebanding material and thickness is key to achieving a durable, visually consistent finished product.

EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) Adhesive

The most widely used thermoplastic hot-melt adhesive for edgebanding. EVA is heated in the edgebander's glue pot, applied to the panel edge, and bonds as it cools. It offers reliable performance at a lower cost than PUR, though it has less resistance to heat and moisture, making it best suited for interior applications.

FANUC

A leading manufacturer of CNC control systems, servo motors, and robotics used in industrial woodworking machinery. Feed Rate

The speed at which a workpiece moves through a machine, typically measured in feet per minute (fpm) or meters per minute (m/min). Four-Sided Moulder

A moulder that processes all four faces of a solid wood workpiece in a single pass, producing a finished profile on the top, bottom, and both sides simultaneously. Four-sided moulders use multiple cutterheads arranged in sequence along the feed path.

Gang Ripsaw

An industrial ripsaw equipped with multiple blades that rips a single board into several widths in one pass. Gang ripsaws are used in production lumber processing and millwork shops where high volume and consistent width accuracy are required. Blade spacing can be fixed or adjustable depending on the machine configuration.

Glue Line

The visible or invisible seam of adhesive between the edgebanding and the panel substrate. A thin, clean glue line is a primary quality indicator in finished cabinetry and furniture. PUR adhesives and laser edgebanding technology can produce nearly invisible glue lines, while EVA adhesives may leave a slightly more visible joint.

Grit

A numerical rating that indicates the coarseness or fineness of an abrasive belt or sandpaper. Lower grit numbers (such as 60 or 80) indicate coarser abrasives used for stock removal and calibration, while higher numbers (such as 150 or 220) are used for finish sanding. Choosing the right grit sequence is essential for achieving the desired surface quality on a wide belt sander.

Hot Melt Adhesive

A category of thermoplastic glue that is melted and applied in liquid form, then bonds as it cools and solidifies. In edgebanding, the two primary hot melt types are EVA and PUR. Hot melt adhesives are also available in polyolefin (PO) formulations that bridge the performance gap between EVA and PUR.

IWF (International Woodworking Fair)

North America's largest trade show dedicated to woodworking machinery, technology, and supplies, held biennially in Atlanta, Georgia. IWF brings together machinery dealers, manufacturers, and production professionals to see equipment demonstrations and explore new technology. Moulder

Moulder Knife

A profiled cutting blade mounted in a moulder cutterhead that shapes wood to a specific cross-section as it passes through the machine. Nesting

A CNC programming technique that arranges multiple parts on a single sheet of material to minimize waste and maximize yield. Router Bit

S4S (Surfaced Four Sides)

A lumber processing standard indicating that all four faces of a board have been planed smooth and brought to final dimensions. S4S stock is the typical output of a four-sided moulder. Producing consistent S4S material is a fundamental requirement for millwork firms, furniture producers, and any shop working with solid wood components.

Sliding Table Saw

A panel saw variant featuring a precision sliding carriage that supports large or heavy workpieces for accurate crosscuts, rip cuts, and angled cuts. The sliding table moves the material past a fixed blade, giving the operator excellent control over cut accuracy. Spindle

The motorized, rotating unit on a CNC router or moulder that holds and drives the cutting tool. Spindle Rebuild

A repair service in which a worn or damaged spindle is disassembled, inspected, and reconditioned with new bearings, seals, and other components as needed. Throughput

The volume of parts or panels a production shop processes per unit of time, often measured in parts per shift or sheets per hour.
